In regards to the uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, as a Director of Photography, I can location unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Smart Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack) . Tidy Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the unbelievable misfortune of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the unique undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the unique camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more approved optical composite dupe negative inserts. Astonishing. That is why it looks as top-notch as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Graceful Film…and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

I first saw this tragic comedy when it was released in Stockholm in 1970, and it is against the background of this period that it should be considered: free care for and the birth pill; the hippie flower-power philosophy; the Vietnam war; the drug culture. Twenty-nine years ago this movie had a weird finish on me, I left the cinema with a profound feeling of joy

According to what I have read, the movie is unscripted and the acting improvised, this comes across very clearly. The sound quality is sometimes awful. We are shown a series of ‘tableaux’, in which some very perturbed, hideous characters play out their daily life centred on drugs, sex and misery.

Joe, an impotent heroine addict, is constantly looking for his next hit and constantly coming across women who want to fabricate fancy with him. Joe and his ‘wife’, sweet Holly Woodlawn, a frightening transvestite (and distinguished actress), live in a run-down apartment furnished with what Holly finds in the garbage.

These two characters and the fauna who surround them gain into the most absurd and unlikely situations. The movie is sprinkled throughout with humour and grim reality, a dichotomy which works disturbs and delights. One finds oneself passing from disgust to a belly laugh in a matter of seconds and this is where the strength of the movie lies.

To be brief, here is a microscopic gem which is well worth seeing, an absurd drug-sex comedy with worthy artistic talent. For adults only.

When I saw this movie assist in the l970s, I was knocked out of my BVD’s with Joe the Pretty. I had never seen a creature like him before: radiant, tough, sweet, comical and sex personified. I’ve read where this movie was NOT improvised, that Paul Morrisey adhered to a professional script and was a strict, but creative director. Then, I’ve heard it was honest the opposite. I really don’t deem Joe was faking his drug induced stupor, expressions, mumblings. I loved Holly Woodlawn but nearly upchucked when her frightful, pregnant sister entered the report. Detestable is too calm a word. That drooling wet mouth and buck teeth, her bloated figure, yuck! I wish that murky tiny lost child, Andrea Feldman, had a bigger portion. Thankfully, she was showcased in Andy Warhol’s HEAT, another common. Once I was in the Village during that time and my boyfriend told me Joe Dellasandro was walking objective ahead. I fled–not wanting to study a sincere embodiment of a movie icon. The same thing happened when Liz Taylor left the theater each night during her starring role in “The Itsy-bitsy Foxes” during the 80s. Each night I would watch the sizable crowds, waiting to seek her. But when I’d survey the stage door commence and she began to effect her exit, I fled. Reality’s a nice situation to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. Gotta race and study Joe, my Joe, my fantastic Joe in “Trash.” A genuine underground classic.

Finally, after all this time, Warner Brothers have arrive to their senses. On October 7th, we will be treated to a heftly helping of one of the greatest Christmas films to ever grace the silver cover…………in WIDESCREEN.

I was extremely disappointed with the previous DVD release of this film which contained a pan & scan presentation and nothing more than a theatrical trailer in the extras department.

What we have here is a special edition of this huge movie, which will absorb audio commentary from both Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Creep, a “making of” featurette, as well as other stocking stuffers which have yet to be disclosed at this point to time.

Being a colossal fan of this movie, I honestly can’t wait for this release. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” has become a holiday tradition in my home, and to be able to inspect it the procedure it was intended to be seen is truly a treat for me.

Aside from the features of the disk, the film itself is the right gift. One of the funniest movies today which mild withstands the test of time even 15 years later. The premise is simple. Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Breeze) is hell curved on having an aged family Christmas in his home, relatives and all. Of course, the hilarity kicks in when things inaugurate to go awry. There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, it would be difficult to list them all. You have everything from an electrocuted cat, to a house with the brightest Christmas light expose known to man. Let’s not forget the dried up turkey, the saucer sled and the dog/squirrel scurry! There’s so grand more I could say to praise this movie, but if you haven’t already seen it, [I won't say more]

You really recall your life in your hands every time you sit down with a Chevy Move film. Let’s face reality here: Chevy Shuffle is responsible for several of the worst movies ever made. Does it bewitch more than a few minutes of viewing to eye the mind numbing folly of “Nothing But Difficulty,” “The Three Amigos,” and “Spies Like Us”? Budge has determined had his truly embarrassing moments on the colossal mask. What redeems the guy, at least in my eyes, are several films that play up to the comedian’s vivid alecky, deadpan delivery. “Fletch,” of course, is the gold standard of Chevy Run films, but other movies showcase his talents honest as well. I always plan “Deal of the Century” a classic Dart film, as well as “Improper Play” (although the latter was more of an ensemble record) . But we need gaze no further than the four National Lampoon Vacation films to truly consider the merits of this comedian turned actor. Actually, I should say three Vacation films since the second installment, where the Griswold family went on a tour of Europe, ranks as one of the most abominable stories ever do on film. Of the three successful entries, “Christmas Vacation” is the best, perhaps even eclipsing the first movie that started it all.

You won’t hear the familiar strains of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” in “Christmas Vacation,” and there are no corpses strapped to the top of a plot wagon either. Instead, the film invites us into the Griswold home for an aged fashioned Christmas celebration the likes of which soon come catastrophic levels. Clark (Chevy Saunter) and Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) Griswold, along with their disinterested kids Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Russ (Johnny Galecki), invite the whole family over for a season filled with happiness. Clark’s parents Clark Sr. (John Randolph) and Nora (Diane Ladd) expose up, as does Ellen’s folks Art (E.G. Marshall) and Frances (Doris Roberts) . And yes, even Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) makes an appearance to build the day. Of course, along with the family comes the inevitable frustrations and stresses everyone who has ever dealt with a reunion dreads. Clark Griswold refuses, at least initially, to descend into a morass of cynicism and despair amidst the bickering and insults. His invention of a modern milk preservative has our hero hoping his Christmas bonus will be extra tremendous this year, sizable enough so he can install an in ground swimming pool in the backyard. Unfortunately, his boss Frank Shirley (Brian Doyle-Murray) is a scrooge with plans to beget the company more fiscally conservative.

While he waits for the check to near at the house, Clark embarks on several hilarious projects that haul in the belly laughs. His attempts to conceal every square slip of his house with Christmas lights is a chore requiring several falls off a ladder, pointed verbal repartees with his snotty neighbors Margo and Todd Chester (Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Nicholas Guest), and repeated failures to fetch the strands to light up. The acquisition and installment of the Griswold family Christmas tree is another chore handled in Clark’s inimitable style. Imagine the pine they string up in Rockefeller Square every year, subtract roughly five feet from its height, and you have the tree Clark insists on setting up in the house. This thing is so immense that the branches knock out the windows when Griswold cuts the rope holding the branches together. No Yuletide season, however, would be complete without a slide to the slopes for a sledding excursion, an event filled with disastrous implications when Griswold comes up with the gleaming thought to conceal the bottom of his sled with a Teflon based substance. My well-liked scenario involves Clark trapped in his attic for a few hours. He spends his time dressed up in women’s clothing (to pause warm) watching obsolete home movies of his childhood. His abrupt topple through the trap door had me laughing for hours afterwards.

The cast of “Christmas Vacation” gels fantastically, far better than any cast in the other three films. Kudos as always go to Randy Quaid as the squirrelly moocher Eddie; a film in this series honest wouldn’t be the same without this character driving Clark to fits of distraction. Beverly D’Angelo is one of those actresses who obtain hotter and hotter with age. The linchpin of the film is, as always, Chevy Mosey as the distress prone Clark Griswold. This is a role tailor made for his stamp of clumsy, caustic humor. I don’t know about you, but Chase’s depiction reminds me in many ways of my absorb father–he won’t listen to the advice of anyone else, his ideas are the best ideas, he tosses safety to the wind when working on unsafe projects, etc. But like my Dad–and probably countless other fathers–Clark is genuine and wants his loved ones to have fantastic family memories. The film works so well, I suspect, because most of us instantly discover his character traits in our enjoy beloved family patriarchs. Especially when Clark can’t stand the pressure anymore and launches into one of his over the top tirades, again a trademark of our enjoy fed up fathers.

Although the DVD carries the “Special Edition” label, the extras are surprisingly sparse. A trailer and a commentary constitute the sum total of goodies available on the disc. Moreover, the commentary doesn’t include Chevy Lumber. At least you hear Randy Quaid, Beverly D’Angelo, Johnny Galecki, Miriam Flynn (Eddie’s wife Catherine), director Jeremiah Chechik, and producer Marty Simmons, but why no Clark W. Griswold? Perhaps he wanted too mighty money. His absence is discouraged and mars what is otherwise a gargantuan commentary track. I don’t even wait until Christmas to sight this movie; it’s fun works year round. If you haven’t seen it yet, you ought to immediately. You’ll admire it.
