Charles Tatum (Kirk Douglas), once an ace journalist, is now desperate for a job after being fired from the best newspapers in the East. He gets a job at a itsy-bitsy Albuquerque, Novel Mexico newspaper with the arrangement of serving his “prison sentence” only until he can secure a broad sage that will land him aid where he belongs, at the grand newspapers abet East. Remembering the national sensation caused by the Floyd Collins tale in 1925, Tatum has mountainous plans for Leo. In no time at all, Tatum takes charge of the rescue attempt and assumes almost god-like position as thousands of gawking spectators from around the country rep around the mountain where Leo is trapped. Shoring up the cave’s weakened tunnels would regain Leo out in a matter of hours, but instead Tatum (to prolong the biggest chronicle of his career) orders a astronomical drill be brought to the top of the mountain and slowly work it’s intention to Leo. Tatum is in the spotlight like never before, and he loves every runt of it.
Leo’s uncaring wife Lorraine (Jan Kindly) begins charging admission to spectators in order to cash in on the misery and suffering of her husband. Once Lorraine sets her eyes on Tatum it’s only a matter of time before she seduces him. Tatum is in control of everything and everyone, even the curved sheriff, who is also using this sensational narrative to furthur his career. Everything is going immense until Leo becomes sick with pneumonia and word gets out that unless he’s rescued within 12 hours it’ll be too slack. Tatum then agrees to exercise the posthaste design of shoring up the cave’s walls, but at this point it might be too gradual to effect Leo.

Ace in the Hole’s grim and cynical nature made it a flop in 1951, even after it was renamed “The Vast Carnival.” Only now has Billy Wilder’s underated masterpiece finally been acknowledged as one of Wilder’s best movies (and that’s saying a lot) . It is one of the darkest movies of film noir, with genuine performances by Kirk Douglas and Jan Friendly. Douglas frequently played cold-hearted characters driven by ruthless, egotistical greed, but never did he play this type of character better than in “The Grand Carnival.” Jan Marvelous played the frigid and calculating femme fatale to perfection, cooly dishing out lines like “I don’t pray. Kneeling bags my nylons.”
Wilder brilliantly portrayed a world where misery and human suffering is exploited to the gross, yet somehow this classic film noir is unexcited unavailable on dvd or vhs. The movie can at least be seen on cable now and then, and “bootleg” copies on dvd and vhs are available, but how powerful longer do we have to wait for this movie to gain an official dvd release?!? Few directors captured the style, mood, and atmosphere of film noir better than Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Blvd.), and Ace in the Hole/The Grand Carnival deserves at least the same kind of recognition that his other films have recieved.
This 1951 film seems as relevant today as it ever did. Kirk Douglas is perfectly cast as an unethical newspaper reporter who, through his influence over the town’s sheriff, keeps a dying man trapped in a mine for several days longer than significant in order to milk the fable for all it’s worth – a strategy he hopes will attend him claw his procedure befriend to the top of the journalistic world. Billy Wilder’s incredibly vitriolic film tells many truths about how reality is manipulated by the media to befriend personal and political ends without regard to the suffering caused by this agenda. His film spares nobody in its critique: those who perpetuate the lies, those who directly back from them, even those who uncritically hold the stories are all complicit in the wrongdoing. Wilder made many stout films, most of which are far better known than this one, but “Ace in the Hole” is up there with the best of them.
Criterion’s release of this film is definitely cause for celebration.

“The Last Emperor” is the Academy Award winning movie about China’s last imperial ruler, Pu Yi (John Lone) . Taken from his mother at the age of three and raised to maintain in his absorb divinity as absolute monarch, Pu Yi? s marriage to Wan Jung (Joan Chen) is marred by her opium addiction and the tragic death of their only child and heir to the throne. Peter O? Toole appears as Reginald Johnston, English tutor to his majesty in the ways of diplomacy and the outside world. The film presents China? s Forbidden City as allegory for the pampered but caged existence of wealth and the destructive nature of absolute power. Eventually forced to coast his gated paradise, Pu Yi succumbs to the decadence of becoming a playboy, a stooge of the Japanese, and a victim of China’s cultural reforms and re-education programs.
The film is a poignant, heart-breaking, tragic and sweeping saga that won, among its other award, the Oscar for best cinematography. But you’d ever guess it by looking at this DVD transfer. The 2:35:1 image has not been anamorphically enhanced and exhibits impartial about every digital anomaly that one can glean on a poorly mastered DVD. There’s edge enhancement, aliasing, gorgeous detail vivid, color smearing, tiling, color distortion, loss of aesthetic details, extremely vulgar dissimilarity levels, disturbing halos and fading of the film? s negative. There are chips, scratches, tears and camera negative jitter. The audio is a rather contemptible 2.0 mix. After viewing this travesty it is my true hope that whoever was responsible for mastering this DVD will never net the opportunity to be reach such equipment again. There are no extras and no reason why anyone should invest in this DVD.
BOTTOM LINE: Honest DO NOT Win THIS MOVIE! There’s nothing to recommend the print ragged or the mastering employed to bring it to the miniature veil. If there was room to rate this disc as ‘zero’ stars I would have done unbiased that. Unfortunately, ‘one’ is the lowest I could go.

I’ll get this review short and sweet. First off, the movie itself is derserving of all its Oscar wins. The acting is righteous, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the tale is well-known if not inviting. If you are a movie lover you will certainly be pleased the beauty and power of this film. So why only 3 stars? I simply can’t give the DVD more than 3 stars, becuase quite frankly, this movie deserves a better film transfer and better audio on DVD. The portray is sub-par when you compare it to almost all the original DVD releases today, and the sound is a tiny better, but not by worthy. Perhaps the studio should revisit this title and dapper it up with a loaded modern special edition release with a squeaky dapper anamorphic record transfer with DD 5.1 and DTS sound to boast. This DVD’s director’s prick is also remarkable longer than the novel, which in my idea, doesn’t pain the film at all, but it doesn’t improve the film drastically either. So outrageous your buying decision on the following fact: this is a masterpiece movie on a sub-par DVD transfer. To me, the movie was a must have DVD, which was worth the hold brand alone. Afterall, it is calm better than VHS.

Explorers is a must for all apt science fiction film collectors. The space elegantly captures the dreams of a typical young sci-fi fan / status enthusiast. Hawke, then about 12, receives schematics from outer dwelling in his dreams. His buddy Phoenix builds a circuit from the dream-diagram and hooks it to his computer, generating a miraculous force field valid of driving a location ship – which they execute, with a third pal from school (Presson), from junkyard parts!

Joe Dante’s 1985 plot adventure pays homage to classic sci-fi in a number of allusions: the videos Ethan Hawke watches in bed (The War of The Worlds and This Island Earth), the conventional sf paperbacks and Classics Illustrated comics in River Phoenix’s basement, the mouse named Heinlein (after the gigantic American science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein), and the usual supporting roles of Dick Miller and Robert Picardo (The Burbs, Matinee, etc.) . Watching this movies always puts me in the mood to reread the Heinlein juvenile novels (Have Site Suit, Will Recede, Rocket Ship Galileo, etc.) .
If anyone says they’re disappointed in the ending, that’s only because the first 90 minutes of the film are so satisfactory, it’s hard for any ending to live up to the oustanding buildup, including exploring the interior of a gigantic alien spacecraft. Choose it for what it is, and if you’re into spot ships or sci-fi, you’ll care for it.

Fans of movies like “Galaxy Quest” will probably catch this dated but peaceful exciting. If you enjoyed “Goonies” you should like this movie. Three teenage boys originate a spaceship from plans that are sent to them by aliens. The fact they invent it from a carnerval breeze and other miscellaneous items only shows the imagination. A fun adventure for kids of all ages. The young aliens that sent the plans to the teenagers have modelled their behavior based on our TV shows. The alien comedy is like Robin Williams did in Aladdin, off the wall imitations of celebrities. I enjoyed it when I first saw it as someone in my twenties and I aloof judge it is fun to witness.

This is an extremely in-depth peer at the Civil War and covers many topics quite thoroughly. A minor gripe I had: while the utilize of reenactments of battles is not necessarily a terrible thing (I’m a reenactor myself), when they employ the same scenes over & over & over for many different battles it can fetch tiring, after a while! 3 1/2 stars.
